Definition Of Courage

Courage can be defined in many ways. According to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what,” (Lee, 112). In the novel, the character of Atticus Finch- a very strong-willed and fair-minded father and lawyer- demonstrates this courage and commitment during a difficult time in his community. Very similar to Atticus, this definition of courage is shown by the civil rights activist, Mamie Till-Mobley who, with Chris Benson, wrote her story in Death of Innocence. In their own ways, both of these people had tremendous persistence and strength in difficult situations. Not only did Atticus and Mamie show their courage in incredibly unfair courts,
