Have you ever received a random gift of kindness of a stranger? Or just out of the blue from a family member? How would you have described this “act of kindness”? You would probably use words such as nice, thankful, grateful, kind, etc. In today’s English dictionary the definition of kindness is as follows: “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” And I suppose that’s an accurate description of what kindness is. Originating in Middle English between 1250-1300 in the UK region, it’s meaning hasn’t really changes in the past 700 years. Though, the use of this word has decreased from being one ever 400 words in books, down to only one every 6,000 words. And that’s no coincidence, as I’m sure we have all experienced a decrease
