The three essays assigned this week had several common threads running through them. Soup Joumou I woke up to a text message from my mother with precise instructions on where to purchase all the groceries for this year’s Soup Joumou. When I arrived at my local supermarket, I took out my phone to look at the grocery list that my mother sent me, I walked up and down the various aisles, and was at the super market for an exhaustingly long two hours. I collected 2 cloves of garlic, 2 scallions who had already been sliced. I also got dried thyme, one medium sliced shallot, 1 scotch bonnet chili, already stemmed and seeded, I got lime juice, of course I wouldn’t hear the end of it If I forgot the salt and pepper.
Intro: When people eat food they do not think about what is in it, or how it is made. The only thing people care about is what the food tastes like and how much they get. During the 1900’s the meat packing industry had not regulations of any kind. All that mattered to the industry was that they made as much money as possible with as little expenditure as possible. During this times people were often made sick and died either from working conditions or poor food quality.
The early 1620’s called upon desperate measures for the Virginians, surges of hunger so violent that it caused some to go mad and eat anything- the corpses of loved ones took a large popularity on the menu- they became despondent to grow food and stay alive, human nature beginning to take over. The Virginians had finally developed a “better” system that differed from their starvation of the time. Having had just recently committed the first few acts of slavery, Jamestown kicked off a big bang for the journey of slavery for the average dark, non-leisure men of the world. The media and Michael Pollan indicate that everything should be replaced with real, fresh, and unprocessed foods, instead of engineering in as much sugar, salt, and fat as possible into industrialized foods.
