In order to understand the characteristic of the Demiurge and the physical universe, we must first understand the gnostics diverse set of beliefs. The gnostics believed that they had secret knowledge about creation and how the universe came to be. The gnostics believed that there is a heavenly non-physical realm called the Pleroma which is occupied by Aeons, Aeons are creature created by God that evokes spiritual philosophical ideals. Sophia, who represented wisdom, resided on the second ring of the Pleroma which meant she could not experience God. Her desire and passion to experience God produced the Demiurge. Unlike the Aeons, the Demiurge is physical and shapeless with a male identity and feminine traits. He is self-aware and believe he is God. The gnostics identify the Demiurge as God of the universe. The Demiurge became God of things outside of the Pleroma. He became creator of material things and creator of the physical Universe that is isolated from the higher dimensions(Pleroma) above. The Demiurge created the Archon these are different classes of angels. Some Gnostic believed that Jesus was fully divine and his physical form an illusion.
