Recommended: True definition of democracy

A democracy is when the supreme power lies in the people and is exercised either by them or representatives who are elected through a popular voting system. In a democratic government, the rights of the citizens are established and protected. These key elements of a democracy exhibits in the Constitution which is a document demonstrating America’s national government and the fundamental laws and rights of the people. The Constitution of America is a democratic outline of the United States government because it can be amended, representatives and officials are elected by the people and powers of authority in government are restricted. In Article I of the Constitution, it states that the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are appointed by citizens. Representatives are chosen by popular vote in each district of the state while senators are voted by the state as a whole. In addition, the president, head of the executive branch, is determined by the specific number of electors each state has during a presidential election, as stated in Article II. Though, the decision of these electors are decided by the popular vote of the citizens in each state. The act of voting is one of the most important responsibilities of a citizen in a democratic nation and the Constitution permits it. Being able to vote for officials in the government ensures the best interests of the people and gives citizens power which is the fundamental idea of a democracy. Popular sovereignty or a majority consensus allows the rights and liberty of all citizens to be protected.

To reiterate, the Constitution of the United States supports a democratic government. This document contributes to the crucial objectives of a democracy which is power to the people and making sure all are equally represented and protected of their rights and liberty.
