What values are most essential to the structure, function, and heart of American Democracy?
In order for democracy to exist, there must be basic human rights. Having the rights to speak, work, associate, freedom, the pursuit of happiness, self-choice, and just life in general, that is the foundation of democracy. A “government by the people” would be non-existent without the voice of the people to run it. With no opinion, no say, no work, no freedom, no rights in life, we would be incapable of fighting to be the nation and government we so desire. The people would be screaming the words that should be heard, but are instead silenced by the duct tape around their mouth and rope around their wrists that is the lack of basic human rights.
Freedom falls under the importance of the rights above. Freedom is the condition in which one is free, as opposed to being confined or restrained mentally, physically or figuratively. With no freedom, humans are trapped in an enclosure where we barely fit. We’re alive, we’re still breathing, but is there any purpose to that life we’re living? With freedom being such a large part of human rights, it is essential to the function of the American democracy.
