The Federalist and Jeffersonian Republicans were the first party system to immerge in the seventeen nineties. The federalist focused on the concerns of New England merchants. The wanted to rebuild a relationship with Britain, assumption of debt from the revolutionary war, and programs with encouraged manufacturing. The Jeffersonian republics were run with southern agriculture in mind.
With two parties you are polarizing the electorate. In terms of the party system, America is currently in the sixth party system which is focused on the candidate. During the 2016 primary elections, voters seemed to focus more on the candidate than the party. For example, republican voters hated Hillary Clintons email scandal and hence many voters turned towards Donald Trump. The parties are the democrats and the republicans. One person from each party is chosen to represent their party. The presidential election is when those two representatives from each party go head to head to try to win the vote of as many states they can.
If there was three parties, and one of the parties won the election by a slight ⅓ vote, it would not be a majority of the people. Thomas Jefferson once said. “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties”. The reason he said this was because he feared a strong central government. Then for some Americans, fears of a strong central government taking advantage came true. This is when the two political parties split.
