On October 13, 2015 at 8:36 pm on the CNN channel, I watch the Democratic Presidential Debate. The debate was hosted by Anderson Cooper. The candidates were Governor Lincoln Chafee, Governor Martin O’Malley, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Senator Jim Webb. The topics that caught my interest were gun control, foreign policy, climate change, Black lives matter, income equality and cost of education. With the recent mass shooting across the country, the topic of gun control arose. Senator Sanders supports a ban on assault rifles. He also states that background checks are needed because knowingly giving a gun to a criminal is wrong. Human intelligence was needed on the ground to make better decisions, based on what is going on in that country. Secretary Clinton called Vladimir Putin, of Russia, a bully and that he will regret what he has done to his people, with the booming of his citizens causing them to escape. Senator Sanders wants to put together an Arab coalition that should be leading the effort to stand against the violence in Syria. Senator Webb focused on China and the cyber warfare in this country, also the national security threats with the nuclear material in Iran. Senator Sanders indicated that the middle class is disappearing, they are working long hours for lower wages. Senator Sanders would like to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour to help rebuild the middle class. Secretary Clinton said Americans need a good education to obtain a good job. More student would attend college if it was affordable. Senator Sanders mentioned that “a college education is equivalent to a high school education now in 2015”. Meaning that the credentials of a bachelor’s degree is not worth as much as it used to be in the past. To obtain a good job further education is needed. Secretary Clinton suggests to refinance college debt to a low interest rate. Governor O’Malley wishes to create a separate consensus from commercial banking and refuse the Glass-Steagall Act. The Glass-Steagall Act is a bill that was designed to provide for the safer and more effective use of the assets of banks, to regulate interbank control, to prevent the undue diversion of funds into speculative operations, and for other purposes.
