What Are the Basic Differences Between Democrats and Republicans?

The political party is an organization of people who share similar ideas about the way the country should be governed. Political parties perform important tasks in government. In fact, political parties select candidates, check the other party and inform the public. Most importantly, they organize the government. The history of U.S political parties begins with the Federalists and their opponents the Anti-Federalists. Two major political parties in the United States today, however, are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party and there is so much attention focused on only these two parties. Student News Daily reported (n.d.) that “Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all, while Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense.” The Democratic Party takes a much more liberal stance especially when it comes to social issues. Moreover, the Democrats want the government to take a more active role in the area of social welfare, especially those in need. Republicans, however, support less funding for the poor and private business organizations.
