(AGG) Why would authors include symbolism in their books? (BS-1) The use of a major symbol in Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples is seen when Najmah gets her first haircut after her family is killed and her home is destroyed.(BS-2) Other than using the haircut to show Najmah’s reaction to important events, Staples also includes stars as another symbolic idea. (BS-3)
Symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. In Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson uses literary devices to help the reader better understand Melinda’s personal changes and growth. Trees, lips, and coldness are all symbolically used to represent the changes of Melinda. Throughout the novel, trees play a big part in symbolizing Melinda. Melinda is constantly drawing and relating to trees in the book.
Blasphemy, the act of speaking God’s name sacrilegiously. In Javier Villa-Flores’ book Dangerous Speech: A Social History of Blasphemy in Colonial Mexico he writes about the ways blasphemy is used, prosecution, and how blasphemy was represented in Mexico between the 16th and 17th century. In order to understand the culture and history of Mexico during this time blasphemy cases are used to understand popular piety, and social culture. During the sixteenth and seventeenth century there were many cases of blasphemy. With a collection of all these cases, they can be used in order to better understand the nature of popular piety.
The author of ‘The Kite Runner,' Hosseini, employs a variety of symbols to create a deeper meaning throughout the book. Symbolism is used to create deeper a meaning in in many ways in the book especially in objects like kites which represent happiness when the kite is flying high and guilt about the blue kite. The cleft lip symbolises betrayal of brothers and also represents Baba’s and Amir’s redemption.
Symbolism is used in many stories, novels, and essays. It is an extraordinary addition to make a story interesting. The use of symbols in stories make the most significant ideas strike out as well as make the reader have distinctive ideas of what actually is trying to be said. Symbolism makes the reader think critically about what the author wants us as the readers to transmit. In “Paul’s Case,” there are some examples of the use of symbolism.
If there are no symbol for something, it is safe to say it doesn’t exist. For example, there is nothing cute and fluffy about the word kitten, yet, through symbolic interactionism we have been taught to associate that word with the cute and fluffy little animal in real
This demands that new avenues for interpretation be brought forward. To attempts to create spaces for the production of meaning, even when there seems to be none. Such a principle would be an acknowledgement of signification being construed, even in the face of apparent absence. The problematic is the establishment of the signification process itself, rather than analysing the existing meaning (Abraham & Torok, 1977, pp. li-lii).
Based on what the chapter mentioned about “universal” symbols, I can probably say, that possibly there is no such sign as a universal symbol. The example produced by the book’s author suggest that symbols can be misunderstood, for example, I can relate with the author, I would have never thought that someone would be able to confuse the ladies restroom sign, with the men’s restroom sign, yet it happen, and now I feel the need of deciphering future symbols I see to prevent confusion in my life. The Cosmic Postcard on the Pioneer 10, could definitely cause confusion as well. I can personally convey to the “universal” symbol of good will, or hello, but I can see how a different culture that is not accustomed to the symbol can misunderstand it, or simply not understand it at all.

The wearing of religious symbols in Canadian public schools and whether to censor them or not shouldn't be brought to question, provided that in the "Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms", it states under the "Fundamental
“Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.” Symbols can add a deeper meaning than just an object itself that the author is trying to make. Symbols can also foreshadow what is yet to come. The audience can interpret a symbol in many ways it depends on their experience. In Southside Chicago the Younger family is struggling to have hope as they are always facing society.
Symbolism in general is the building blocks to all sources of literature and can shape a piece of writing in many ways. Symbols in general can portray what something or someone represents, giving a deeper and metaphorical meaning to a symbol. Symbolism is often used within poetry, literature, music, or even art. This is how an author conveys a different meaning to the audience. For example artists may use the color “red” not only because of the color theory, but to convey love, passion, and maybe even health.
All the symbols used help the reader engage in the story and really think about what each thing really is trying to symbolize.

In our world religious symbols means a lot to the people who beliefs in religion. Role of symbols is very high in our world and sometimes it is not good for our society because some people give them too high attention. Also Religious symbols are showing the beliefs of people and what they love. Every religion has its own symbols so there is a high number of different types of symbols so the number of people who wears religious symbols is also very high, but some of these symbols are not hidden and they are open for everyone to see and that could be the main problem. Some people say that authorities cannot ban religious symbols in public places because people have their own rights to wear what they where they want, but for several reasons authorities should ban religious symbols in places like senior schools or kindergartens.
