In this article, Ms. Bastin summarizes the educational requirements for dental hygienists. Furthermore, she reports that in 2008, the number of accredited dental hygiene programs were 301; however, in 2009, the number increased to 309. In this article, Hartley reports the results of RDH eVillage survey that nearly eighty percent of the dental hygienists believe there is a major increase in the number of dental hygienists since 2007, and this results in difficulty finding employment. The 2007 recession had a great impact on the proliferation of dental hygiene programs that flooded the job market with newly graduated dental hygienists. Hartley reports that eighty-one percent of the hygienists says that it would be difficult finding a job within a short period of time, two percent would have no problem finding a job, and seventeen percent said it is possible but challenging. He also emphasizes the nature of the new online recruitment system. Lee says that in the past 25 years, there has been a 65.8% increase in the number of dental hygiene programs. Lee suggests that in-house-staffing agencies might be one way of finding work; however, it has its downfalls such as extra expense for the dental office that uses the agency, a commission taken out of the candidate’s paycheck. The contract between the agency and the hygienist does not allow taking a permanent employment offer. Lee also explains how online job sites charge outrageous fees for dentists to access the candidates resumes. Therefore, the future of job security is uncertain for dental hygienists.
