My motivation in life thrives when I face challenges. My biggest challenge was moving away from my family and developing my network on my own. Growing up as a member of a Korean family, our greatest values are gathering and having quality time. Thus, it was hard to accept that I am no longer involved in family times due to the long distance. However, as I had more time for myself, I could look back at myself and explore my interest. Coming to the United States, I first got interested in psychology, since I enjoyed reaching out to people who have different backgrounds. For instance, when I was volunteering at the Pagudpud Adventist Wellness Center, I found myself having conversations and making jokes with people who speak Tagalog without a translator. It was difficult to understand fully, but I felt that I was making connections with people there. Later, I could also share my knowledge of health and hygiene with the people at the center. By working with vising doctors and dentists, I was exposed to more medical-related professions. Then, one of the dentists suggest to me how psychology can be expanded to the dental hygiene field of work. I liked how dental hygienist provides care not only with active communication but also empathy and compassion. I did not know anyone in Spokane, so I attend most of the school events to make friends and develop networks. It was the most challenging experience as I was stepping out of my comfort zone. I did not regret moving to Spokane because I learn how to be involved in a different community, not only the Korean community.
