Depression affects everyone, but not everyone recognizes it. In our society today you here about depression more and more; depression is as common as the flu. We recognize it as a true problem today. Back in the 1930s depression wasn’t recognized as it is today. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers is a good example of this. The main character in this book is suffering from depression and the people around him refuse to acknowledge this. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter focuses on a deaf mute named John Singer. John Singer lives with his best friend Spiros Antonapoulos, also a deaf mute. About a chapter into this book Antonapoulos is admitted into an insane asylum and Mr. Singer becomes very depressed because his only for of communication was sent to an insane asylum. Not able to live in the apartment he once shared with Antonapoulos he moves into the Kelly house, where he meets Mick Kelly, another main character in this book. Throughout the next 6 months he meets Biff Brannon, Jake Blount, and Dr. Copeland. All of these characters confide in Mr. Singer; They tell him everything that is wrong in their life, seriously every little thing. Mick feels like she is completely alone because she is extremely intelligent, but she has to “dumb herself down” so she can speak to her family. Mick feels like her family does not share her ambition to go on and do more in life. This book goes on to show that Mick is in her one little world through out most of the book. She feels that she is completely alone even though she is surrounded by friends and family that love her, but instead she just closes herself
