Deprived of Guilt “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view”- Harper Lee, a famous contributor to the world of literature as a whole through her book “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Throughout the story To Kill a Mockingbird, racism and prejudice against colored people is very prominent throughout the actions of characters in the story. Oftentimes though, despite the morality of it all, people bat a blind eye to the consequences of their actions against minorities. Blindness to prejudice is primarily presented through the sole experience of Scout through events such as the courtroom experience with the unjust prosecution of Tom Robinson as well as the everyday interactions with the people of Maycomb who are seemingly unintentionally biased …show more content…

That would make him less of a man to the point where Scout and Jem wouldn’t even have to mind him.-(pg 75) Additionally, Calpurnia acts as an in-home representation of a colored person and through Scout's experiences with her, such as helping in the kitchen or going to church with her, Scout gains further insight on not being blind to prejudice. Scout's experience at the courtroom during the trial acts as a key representation of blindness to prejudice through the actions of others around her. First off, Scout experiences blindness to prejudice at the very end of the case. Despite Atticus essentially making Bob Ewell out to be a fool, as well as proving the injuries inflicted upon Mayella could not have been from Tom, they still lost the trial. They lost the trial simply because of the jury being blind to prejudice and convicting Tom Robinson of a crime he clearly didn’t commit because he was black. This is supported through the conversation between Atticus and Jem. When Jem asks how they could’ve possibly convicted Tom, Atticus states, “I don’t know, but they did it.
