Gentlemen, in the 30 years that I have been practising law in Maycomb, I have never seen a case so complicated, and so simple at the same time. Complicated because of the circumstances; a white woman’s word versus a black man’s word. Simple because of the facts; clearly no one in this courtroom is guilty besides the defendant himself, Tom Robinson. There is undoubtedly more evidence confirming the fact that Tom Robinson is guilty rather than innocent. Primarily, we have three witnesses’ testimonies proving Tom Robinson guilty, including Tom’s statement that showed admission to guilt. Mr. Heck Tate was our first witness testifying against Tom. According to court records, Tom has been convicted before, for _____________________. Plus, if he’s strong enough to beat someone up, and chop kindlin’, he is strong enough to choke, rape, and beat a girl. After asking, Tom Robinson if he strong enough to choke a woman he stated, ‘I reckon so’. He said there was a possibility that he could’ve done such an act. In addition, why would Miss Mayella, a young white woman, want any type of relationship with a black man? She won’t benefit in any way from this. On the other hand, it makes perfect sense for a black man to want a special relationship with a white woman. He passes by everyday, and also helps her with her chores too, without anything in exchange. We all know what he wanted. Let’s face it all black men are dogs. If they see something they want they will go after it, and that’s exactly what Tom did. When Miss Mayella told him the children were going out for ice cream he said ‘that was right smart for you to treat ‘em’ because it gave him the perfect opportunity to do whatever he wanted. Besides, Tom may have thought of this as a chance to gain control and power over her with this. He previously stated ‘I felt right sorry for her..’ This signifies a black man trying to gain power over a white woman. You would only feel sorry for someone if you considered yourself superior to
