Coming into college, I knew the amount of writing I was going to have to do for classes and to be honest I wasn’t so psyched. For English, I took the class that was most suitable for me which was English 5A and English 5B; English 5A and English 5B is an English class that helps students transition from high school to college reading and writing over two semesters. I have never been a fan of English because I was never really good at it, so that’s why I took this certain course. Before I came into this course, I thought it was going to be another English class where I just write what the teacher wanted and I’d be done, but surprisingly it wasn’t like that at all. “I Say” strategy has helped balance between writing what the author is saying and what I am saying. This strategy is balancing what a source says (They Say) and balancing what you say such as your own opinion or statements (I Say). The strategy is really important to learn so you don’t make the mistake of summarizing what an author said or just rambling on about what you think causing you to lack in ethos in your paper. In my past essays, it used to be mostly what an author said and what they believe in the argument I was discussing and not so much what I thought about the argument or what the author had to say about it. Now that I know my beliefs are just as important as the authors, I always summarize what an author has to say about the argument and I add in what I believe they mean or just my own opinion about whatever is being discussed.
