Ralph and Jack’s Decisions In the Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Jack both have to make some very big decisions. They make these decisions using ethical approaches that coincide with their values. Ralph uses two ethical approaches when he is making a decision: The Utilitarian Approach and The Common Good Approach. Jack goes against most of the ethical approaches such as The Rights Approach and The Fairness and Justice Approach.
The boys are scared of the beast, and Jack does a better job of easing their fear because Ralph doesn't care about easing the fear of the beast among the boys, and focuses on rescue, but Jack focuses on the beast, and eliminating it. The boys’ main fear is the beast, and since Jack hunts, he makes the boys feel comfortable with him leading them to defend them from the beast. Jack has found out what motivates the boys by understanding what they want most. The boys feel less scared in Jack’s tribe is when the boys are scared to go to the mountain because of the beast, but Jack gives them a sense of safety that they can kill anything, and be stronger than anything or anyone. At first glance, Ralph is a central character who starts and completes William Golding novel The Lord of the Flies. From the onset of the novel, he is described as a “fair boy” with an “attractive appearance” (p7, 29). The author compares his stature as that of a boxer, “as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil” (p11). The changing relationship between Ralph and Jack, the protagonist and antagonist in Lord of the Flies is one where these two boys at first seem like allies but quickly diverge and distance themselves apart and soon become completely at odds with one another. Due to the different approaches they take in the leadership of a group of boys stranded on an uninhabited island, the group splits into two opposing and even warring factions, showing the severity of their antagonism. Rescue is what will truly make the boys happy, seeing their families and parents, getting back to civilization, and school, eating healthy, being clean. This is all what the boys really needed. A second reason why Ralph’s style of leadership was better than Jack’s is because Ralph was concerned about the boy’s safety, and earnestly cared about them. Unlike Jack who only cared for himself like a dictator, which is not good leadership because then boys could get hurt, lost, left behind, forgotten about, and much more things. It's evident in the novel that Jack didn't care for the boys because it says he hated the littluns, and everyone who wasn't of use to him.
I do believe that the main character changed by the end of the book, although some other characters changed a bit more, I still believe that Ralph changed drastically during the entire span of the book. Ralph, I believe that he starts out as an optimistic and calm boy, and with confidence in himself and that they are going to find a way off the island and a way back home. But, during chapter nine, a savage side shows while he joins the boys chanting about the pig. He only realizes, that later, he never should have participated in the cruel and horrifying act, because of how frightened the whole scene made him.
