No plagiarism detected The relationship between Ralph and Jack was at first very close and secure, but as the story moved on, Jack’s jealousy of Ralph being the leader caused their relationship to become strained, to the extent of hatred and rivalry. The close relationship at first can be represented by this quote “three of us will go on an expedition and find out. I’ll go, and Jack, and, and…”which was written right after Ralph was chosen as the leader of the tribe. The fact that Ralph places Jack right after himself connotes that Jack was the person that he regarded as “most important” after him. This can be seen from Ralph’s words “[Jack and his choir] let that bloody fire out”. The word “bloody” connotes that Ralph felt intense hate to Jack for being oblivious to his seriousness about keeping the smoke going. The use of a declarative sentence to convey this information shows Ralph’s seriousness, probably because Ralph was so overwhelmed by emotions that he did not know how to reprimand Jack. Further on, the incremental build-up of Ralph’s anger until he finally burst at Jack also proves their poor relationship. The repetition of Ralph’s cold statement “You let the fire out.” seemed meaningless to Jack. This sentence seems to highlight the word “you”, which gives us the idea that Ralph was blaming Jack. The second time Ralph said it, he spoke “hoarsely” and “had not moved”. The word “hoarsely” denotes roughly, which connotes that Ralph spoke in a deep voice and was serious about this matter. The fact that he “had not moved” probably suggests that he was still waiting for Jack to take the cue and apologize to him. However, Jack simply put him off by saying that “the fire’s only been put out an hour or two”.
