The beginning was difficult. There was so much blood and loss. Smoke filled the air, causing my throat to burn when I breathed in. I stood on debri that was once a home. Tears blurred my vision, a few escaped, running down my cheeks. A few hours ago, Sardis was my home. Laughter filled the air, people were dancing, everything was fine. Now, all I can hear is people screaming in pain. I sat down and covered my ears, wishing it would all go away.
I sat there for hours, just rocking back and forth. Flashbacks came every now and then. The people of Athens forcing their way into our city, rebelling against the Persian Authority. Throwing torches into houses. People screaming to get out. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. I gagged and shook my head trying to rid the smell. I heard footsteps coming near. Fear took over my body. They’ve came back to kill the survivors. I looked around trying to see where it's coming from, but there’s too much smoke around me. They gave us food, water, and blankets. They told us to get some rest, because it was going to be a long journey. I was currently laying down. The soldiers were telling stories, but I was too tired to listen. I rolled over on my side. The last thing I heard was soldiers laughing, then nothing.
The next day was horrible. We started our journey at dawn and it is now midday. My feet were aching, begging me to stop. I showed them no mercy. I kept walking. Sweat soon covered my body. My breath was uneven, everything in my body was yelling at me to stop. I pushed forward. Every now and then one of the soldiers would pass back water. I lifted it to my mouth and my dry mouth would cry in relief. I passed it back to the next person. I sighed wishing this journey would come to an
