How to travel from Colombo to Galle
Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, which is approximately 32km south of the Bandaranayke International Airport, and is regarded as the main tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Galle, which is situated approximately 120km south of Colombo, is another main attraction. There are five ways to get from Colombo to Galle.
1. Railway Route
When taking the railway route, you need to get on the train from Colombo Fort. There are three kinds of trains that can be used: The third class, which are the slowest trains that stop at all stations, the second class, and the express and night mail.

Maharagama can be reached by taking the bus route no 138 from the Colombo-Fort station. This journey would cost around Rs.35 (LKR), US $0.25, GBP £0.17 or CAD $0.34. The bus takes the high-level road to Kottawa, and then enters the Highway. From there, it goes to Pinnaduwa, the Galle exit, and the normal road to Galle. The route is uneventful as it cuts across the middle of the country, and hardly anything to see except the midway stop at Walipanna, but the bus does not stop anyway. The fare price for the bus is Rs.380 (LKR), US $3, GBP £1.87 or CAD $3.67. This route would normally get you to Galle from Maharagama in 1 ½ hours. From Colombo to Maharagama, it would take about ½ hour to 3 hours, depending on the traffic (Avoid rush hours).
4. Budget Taxi
The fare price for a budget taxi is Rs.5000 (LKR), US $37, GBP £24, CAD $48 for one way (Tata Nano with A/C). If going through the southern highway, as the highway charges, an additional Rs.400 (LKR), US $3, GBP £1.9, CAD $4 needs to be paid. The trip from Colombo via the highway would take from two to three hours. However, if you take the Galle road, then it would take from three to four hours.
