In Lehman College’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, there were modern and avant-garde elements incorporated into the performance. The play follows the script of Shakespeare’s original version of Hamlet, a depressed Prince who is seeking to avenge his father’s death. In the overall play, the young are seen to be neglected by adult’s with authority who chose power, greed, and deceit to rise on top, something very prevalent in recent events (Rick DesRochers). Throughout the play, there are design elements of Afro-Caribbean culture. These diverse cultures are shown through music, and artwork inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ciara, Kendrick Lamar, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and Mos Def (Rick DesRochers). Along with this, the cast of the performance ranged in cultures as well, including actors from Ethiopia, Mali, Albania, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, and New York City (Rick DesRochers). …show more content…

Director Rick DesRochers is the director of the Theatre Program and Associate professor of theatre and multimedia performing arts at Lehman College (Rick DesRochers). Along with this, DesRochers served as the literary director of New Play and Musical Development for the Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival; the Goodman Theatre; Associate Artist at PlayPenn New Play Development Conference; and Artistic Director of the New Theatre of Boston (Rick
