Desolation In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst

Two brothers create a special bond but later learn it is not that way. “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is a story that contains the main character, Brother, and his little brother, Doodle, who struggles physically. Throughout the story Doodle was put to the test by brother physically and sometimes emotionally. Brother did this in pride and learned that pride led to Doodle's Death. The author conveys the feeling of desolation and it is shown by point of view, character dialogue, character actions.
Point of view helps James Hurst make the story feel desolate. Throughout the story the main character, Brother, was expecting that doodle would die so he would look down on doodle which can show the hate/agitation he had against doodle. “He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man’s. ‘And before I’ll help you down from the loft, you’re going to have to touch it.’ ‘I won’t touch it,’ he said sullenly. ‘Then I’ll leave you here by yourself,’” (Hurst 107). This dialogue is desolation because the meaning behind Doodle touching his casket is to realize that he's not supposed to be here and that he should have been dead a while ago. This dialogue also shows desolation because Doodle is able to stand up for himself here but fails because Brother threatens him. Character dialogue is an important tool. An example is at the end of the story when brother is leaving doodle behind in the rain. This is dialogue from Doodles point of view. “‘Brother, Brother, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!’” (Hurst 370). These words are the most impactful of the story and show a direct relationship to the definitive of desolation. This shows how impactful words can be in this story. It also shows how much doodle has worked for and how brother left him behind, by using character dialogue to show the mood is
