Summary of Report Sports fans all over the world can argue statistics of their favorite teams all day long. Sports fans constantly think about what could have been or what should be. However, fans of soccer know it as one of the few sports that critics say statistics are not an important factor. However after reviewing the data gathered here, there is data that we can chart, monitor, and used to predict some outcomes of the match. Using statistics and data of the 2017/2018 Barclays Premier League such as shots taken, blocks, and the amount of completed passes will help to actually predict soccer and help to understand what really drives wins and losses in soccer. In soccer wins are awarded 3 points, draws are awarded 1 point, and losses are awarded 0 points. This means that a team could have more wins and still not be ahead of an opponent, but what drives a team to rank higher in the league? The most important factors in contributing to a team ranking are passing and interceptions. The teams with the highest number of passes are usually higher in the league ranking such as Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham. So, what makes passing so important? In soccer, passing refers to how a team moves the ball from point A to point B. Putting many passes together is the best way to maintain control of the ball which will eventually lead to a shot on target and a goal. The data shows that the top 5 teams in the league have an average of over 6000 passes in 11 games, and this is a good example of why passing is a very significant factor in team rankings. Additionally, interceptions are another indicator of team ranking. Interceptions describe the ability to intercept the pass of your opponents. Interceptions are important because it prevents the attackers from dribbling and passing toward the goal. At the end of every season the bottom 3 teams in the league are demoted to the minor league and the top 3 teams in the minor league are moved up to the premier league. By comparing the data in our data set, this allows us to see the value of scoring and not scoring goals in soccer. A team’s ability to score goals and not allowing goals to be scored specifically correlates with the team’s position in the league. The number one team in the league right now is Manchester City, represented by the light blue color on this graph. Looking at the light blue bar on the left side of the first 2 charts shows a direct relation. The first graph shows the wins and the second shows goals scored. The team with the most wins has the most goals scored as well. The same goes for the team with the least number of wins, they have the least goals scored. The two graphs on the right side of the chart show losses and goals allowed. The top 3 teams in the league also have the 3 least amount of goals scored against them. Basically, if your output is greater than the other team’s input you will always win a soccer
