While some would choose to keep quiet and feel better that way, others would be eager to learn. Which would you prefer to remain in the dark and be silent, or to learn more and be curious about your surroundings and your society? In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Characters struggle making the decision to figure out the dark truth about their society or to stay in the dark and not question it. Although some people may think that not knowing the truth is better, the lack of understanding what's wrong and unusual in your society reveals how unhappy and how it starts a big conflict between the characters wanting to know the truth and not wanting to know. Mildred's lack of concern starts to affect others. Montag starts to get concerned about Mildred's lack of concern for the society they are in. Montag feels Mildred doesn't care for anything serious and does not address much because she's always unbothered. “How long has it been since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?”(49). This shows Mildred's lack of being bothered with things and it is also starting to worry Montag. Montag starts to realize how she isn't concerned about anything going on. Clarisse's desire to be disturbed by her society highlights her role as a threat and stresses the value of questioning norms and establishing real human connection in a dystopian society. Clarisse seems like a very brainy person since she knows so many small things nobody knows. “I've got lost of time for crazy thoughts, I guess. Have you seen the two-hundred-foot-long billboards in the country beyond town? Did you know that once billboards were only twenty feet long? (7).
