Objective 1 In our society today there is an increased number of children with diabetes. Many things are interconnected together like obesity leading to diabetes leading to periodontal disease. Many people don’t understand that many of these things can be prevented, but the number one thing they need to do is get educated and open their minds to new information. Getting educated on how to work with patients with childhood diabetes is very important since the chances of us treating a patient with this condition is very likely. My goal is to understand the accommodation and any treatment changes that need to be done to be able to treat these patients. Objective 2 This patient would need special accommodations when scheduling them for treatment. The best thing I would be able to do for them is to schedule them in the morning about one hour after they have had breakfast. Making sure not to schedule them during times they have to take their medications or insulins. Something I might take for granted would be thinking that my patient and their caregiver already know that their oral health and their systemic health are interconnected. I might be assuming this because I see they are patients of record and just assume they have been given the information already and in return I don’t have to anymore. Another reason would be if I see that my patient’s levels are under control and just assume they don’t need me to reinforce this information on them since they are already compliant. Even though treating a child with diabetes is just the same as treating a child without, the hard part is having them truly understand and value that their oral health can affect their diabetes if not taken care
