This passage shows the rebellious side of mankind. Humans have the power and want the power to control their own lives. They want to lead themselves and not by others. This can be bad and lead to a downfall for the person. Eventually Jack does fall to this power.

“Fancy thinking the Beast was something you can hunt and kill!” said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. “You knew, didn’t you? I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are what they are?”
This passage signifies the true nature of the being call evil. The beast represents the darkness of humanity, wild and uncontrollable, rampaging through the minds of everything. The Beast asks why things are that way. The answer would simply be the greed of power.

This passage signifies the realization and the experience of true darkness and the hatred it creates. Ralph saw with his own two eyes what happens when all innocence dissipates in a person. The darkness takes control and turns savage, pushing whatever and whoever to reach evil desires.

This passage signifies the corrupted mind of a man. When Jack becomes the leader of his own tribe, he takes control and uses the power of the boys to get rid of all obstacles. Ralph was an obstacle since he was ready to take him down before Jack decided to kill him.

This passage signifies the passion and control of a clear mind. Ralph wants to get rescued at all costs since doing things to survive on the island is easier. He is trying to set an example and clear the path of all trouble to get back home. The island must be kept in peace.
