For Diana, food has been a core value of her life and the making and consumption it has brought her closer to many people. It represents not only a snack or meal, but a connection to America while she’s away or it evokes a feeling of closeness between her and the rest of her family. When Diana moves back to America from Jordan, she makes a friend named Suzy who she meets after sharing food with her. It wasn’t any type of food, but it was food from Jordan. Another time, when she was younger, Diana went to a strict elementary school run by nuns. Sister John was one of those nuns, and when she found Diana was from the “Holy Land” they became very close. Sister John also had Diana moved to her class and Diana’s father invited Sister John to come to their house and try food from their origin. Sister John held a high regard for Diana’s father (quote here) but became a bit too fond of him and Diana’s mother had her removed from Sister John’s class.
