n Shakespeare’s Othello, Iago a malevolent and greedy man plots against the members of his town in order to gain the position of lieutenant that he believes was unjustly given to Othello. Enraged and driven by ambition, Iago makes up a series of lies that result in widespread chaos. The chaotic atmosphere of the town is similar to that of Network directed by Sidney Lumet. A capitalist corporation tries to increase its viewers and net pay at all costs. Diana Christensen,a ruthless executive is responsible for the changes that occur within the network. In fact, Diana proves to be the most powerful and effective through her use of numerical and generative language, agnonimation, and her sexuality. Moreso, Iago deems their sexuality inadequate and unacceptable. On the contrary, Diana uses her sexuality to attain more power. Diana becomes sexually involved with Max Schumacher, executive of the corporation. However, the connection is solely physical. Diana is preoccupied with turning the “show into the biggest smash in television” (159) Diana shifts from formal language to casual language which is ironic because it is only when she talks about the success of the show she is able to be more casual and comfortable. To an extent, Diana holds a more intimate reaction towards her work than she does while she is with Max. She’s had “enough of th[e] ;ove making” and wonders if “[he] will let [her] take over the network news show or not?” (219) Ironically, the intimacy between Howard Beale and Diana has resulted intimate because of the business talk that follows and continues in the bed, in the office and everywhere they meet. Diana uses her sexuality to persuade Schumacher to hand down the network news show and she does so effectively. In contrast, Iago deems the women of his town idle and these women are at a disadvantage in terms of their sexuality. Emilia is falsely called a slut by Iago and Iago uses their sexuality against them. Diana is powered by her sexuality and it is evident throughout her relationship with Howard
