Imagine living and hiding in a small annex for two years with seven other people. Imagine having to stay quiet for almost 8 hours a day and not be able to go outside for fear rounded up and sent away to who knows where. Anne Frank had to live in these conditions in order to survive. During that time, Anne, her family, and the Van Daans were hiding from the Nazis and other government officials that were hunting down Jews. In the Definitive Edition “The Diary of a Young Girl”, Anne expresses her feelings, thoughts, and events that happen while hiding in the annex. Anne was treated poorly by almost everyone in the annex. They believed that she was a know it all and was self-centered. Edith would criticize her, give nasty looks, say nasty words, and make accusations. This, on top of everyone else in the annex flinging harsh words and shouts at her head, made Anne cry herself to sleep at night. Anne got to the point where she could “... imagine [her] mother dying someday, but [her] Daddy’s death seems inconceivable” (Frank 50). Anne is constantly the subject of every discussion because her mother believed that she did everything wrong. The one event that Anne could never forget was when her mom and sister would not let her tag along with them to go downtown. They were coming back from the dentist and did not let her come with them to buy something because she had a bike with her. Anne was filled with rage and tears, but her sister and mother just stood there laughing. That day, Anne cried for hours and “strangely enough, even though mother has wounded [Anne] … thousands of times, this particular wound still stings whenever…” she thinks of how angry she was (Frank 158). Edith Frank and the others in the annex treated Anne differently than Margot and always criticized her for everything she
