Have you ever wondered what the detrimental effect of transitioning from a democratic government to a dictatorship is? Well, in the action packed adventure novel Lord of the Flies by Wiliam Golding the reader follows three main characters on a journey to find out. Three ways in which we learn the detrimental effect of transitioning from a democratic government to a dictatorship are by observing a successful government in the beginning, watching the boys lose mental stability as democratic efforts decrease, and watching the boys lose full reign of independence while in a dictatorship. After some time with a successful democratic government Jack's jealousy starts to get the best of him. This jealousy started when Jack didn't win the vote, but it developed as the boys started paying more attention to Ralph's ideas and values instead of Jacks, he felt his ideas and values had been compromised. As Ryan Neighbors explains, Jack is the boy obsessed with the hunt. At the start of the story, he spreads enthusiasm throughout the society. He spreads savagery that ends up killing both the sow and Simon. Later, he and his hunters divide from Ralph's society to make their own that is more barbaric, self-centered, and is a dictatorship. (Neighbors). Although the sow and Simon were killed by Jack, Jack´s tribe of mentally unstable hunters were on board with this action of savagery. Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric were all embarrassed to admit to attending this savage function because they felt like murderers. However, the people under Jack's rule didn't have this feeling because as they experienced dictatorship taking a more prominent stance than democracy they became mentally unstable. Ralph even asked “Which is better—to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?” (Golding 180). Jack and his group of hunters fought Ralph on this idea because they believed food, and savagery was more important than government. The fact that hunting and killing is being argued as better alternitve than unity is disgraceful and shows how detriemtnal this impact truly is on
