In this poem “Nikki-Rosa,” diction and imagery proves that her childhood was a content one despite her hardships. Diction is how we say something or the words chosen imagery involves the five senses when you read something you feel, you hear, you taste, you observe, you smell what is being described. People who do not experience what she does only know from what people tell them and the majority of things told are the terrible experiences.
Giovanni chooses positive words to show how she feels “quite happy” and experiences “very good Christmases” (24; 20). To Giovanni, life is not about money it is that “everybody is together” (19). The words she chose invoke a sense of happiness. The words cause you to vividly visualize what is trying to be expressed. Situations she describes are things that you would associate with a happy normal life. When I hear “very good Christmases” and “happy birthdays” I do not think about all the hardships and trials they went through (20;20). I envision small children ecstatic to open up the presents, no matter what they are; just thankful for receiving anything at all. I smell the gingerbread, I hear Christmas carols being sung door-to-door, I taste peppermint candy canes from the Christmas tree, I can feel that toasty wool blanket wrapped around me as we all huddle together sharing stories about our year. Envisioning the phrase “everybody’s together” excites and emotion of compassion and a love of family. When we think of something gloomy you imagine being alone. Now think of something joyful and cheerful, you want the people you love to be with you. People that you love and care about surrounding you, which helps you, imagine a much more cheerful experience than
