The Metamorphosis Franz Kafka writes a story describing a man who works to provide for his family, then takes a strange turn and he dies because he doesn't know what else to do. This is why in the novella Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka the author uses symbolism, diction, and internal dialogue,metaphor to reveal the theme of how change can cause rejection. Firstly, when talking about symbols, we first get a clue that the personality of Gregor is changing because when the story begins “he found that he had been transformed into an enormous bug” (Kafka 11). Even though he wasn't an actual bug the story paints Gregor as a nobody, or someone with no more value. Gregor’s sister Grete refers to him as “It and monstrous” (Kafka 47) because she says “I refuse to pronounce my brother’s name” (Kafka 47). Gregor’s family now almost dehumanizes him by not wanting to refer to him by his actual name. Additionally, to make things worse Gregor’s family sees him as a burden and they don’t even want to look at him, “[Gregor] draped [the bed sheet] in such a way that he was now completely covered” (Kafka 31). He would “recall his family with love and affection.” (Kafka 49) Gregor sees himself as rejected from his own family now. In summary the symbolism the the story is describing what the bug is to Gregor and his family which is Gregor no longer being anything important. Another element is diction which showed his family didn’t see him as the same person he used to be. The final element is internal dialogue and Kafka showed us through Gregor that Gregor feels worthless to his family now, at one point he was the main provider for his family and now he is shown as an outcast. The book in itself is a metaphor because Gregor feels worthless and like a nobody,Kafka made Gregor turn into something that was worthless and not important, a bug. Finally by Kafka’s use of symbolism, diction, and internal dialogue shows that change can cause rejection even from your own
