Dreams in Romeo and Juliet are both truthful and misleading. They are important because dreams foster an atmosphere of questioning and curiosity within the reader that makes them question the inaccuracy and accuracy of dreams in the play. This leads the reader into a whirlwind of reality and fantasy which is important because Shakespeare spoils the fate of Romeo and Juliet in the prologue. When reflecting on his dream, Romeo says “I dreamt my lady came and found me dead—Strange dream, that gives a dead man leave to think!— And breathed such life with kisses in my lips, That I revived, and was an emperor”(5.1.1-11). This quote is important because it foreshadows and juxtaposes the ending of Romeo and Juliet, which is so important because it keeps the reader questioning when and how Romeo and Juliet will die. In this quote, once again, Romeo is correct and incorrect in his dream. Juliet does find Romeo dead and does kiss him hoping to somehow wake the love of her life up. However, he does not wake up, and he does not fulfill this dream of becoming an emperor. Shakespeare uses the accuracy and inaccuracy of dreams to make the reader question, whether are dreams true. The simple answer is yes and no. Shakespeare is claiming that dreams in Romeo and Juliet aren’t completely true or untrue, but rather something in between. He does this through the continuous examples of these mercurial dreams as well, as making the main spokesperson for dreams Mercutio whose name literally means mercurial or always changing.
