Fear is one of the motivating factors for Romeo and Juliet to act negatively. Romeo feared that attending the Capulet’s party uninvited would lead to his untimely death. He explains to his friend Mercutio why he dreads going to the party: “I fear, too early; for my mind misgives/Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,/Shall bitterly begin his fearful date/With this night’s revels and expire the term/Of a despised life, closed in my breast,/By some vile forfeit of untimely death” (Shakespeare I.iv.106-111). Romeo is in grief when he saw Tybalt kill his best friend, Mercutio. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo shouted with a bitter heart, “Now, Tybalt, take the “villain” back again/That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul/Is but a little way above our heads,/Staying for thine to keep him company./Either thou or I, or both, must go with him” (III.i.118-122). Romeo’s grief over the death of Mercutio led him to take revenge on Tybalt for killing his friend. In medieval times, duels were never meant to be to death because duels were considered illegal and the winner of the duel could be sentenced to death, but Romeo had a murderous intent to kill Tybalt and he did not consider the consequences of his actions. In medieval times, many girls married someone way older than them and many nobles tended to marry off their children to people of equal or higher status than them. Juliet is forced into a courtly relationship with Paris who is from a higher social class than Juliet’s family. If Juliet’s father agreed to marry his daughter to Paris right away without telling him to wait two more years, then Romeo and Juliet would never have been together even if they met at the party. Paris is a person who is shown to get possessive with Juliet and he even acts as if he owns Juliet because they are technically engaged so he will never allow Juliet to walk around freely as she pleases and he will most definitely not let Juliet see another man. Similarly, Romeo fell in love with Juliet at first sight when he saw her at the Capulet’s party and he refuses to let her go even after the party is over. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo exclaims, “She speaks, yet she says
