How Does Shakespeare Present Paris In Romeo And Juliet

Many things we see in life do not seem important now, however that is not always how it seems to be. They might only appear for a little bit then never to be seen again yet they still share a very important role. This idea is shown to us in William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The audience sees that Paris displays these qualities even though his role in the story was short. As Paris’ appears as the antagonist and gives the audience a lot of dramatic irony, he attempts to marry Juliet, makes drama amongst the other characters, and is slain because of his actions. As the story unfolds, Paris seems to have an interest in Juliet. Lord Capulet upon learning this makes the date that, “Juliet shall be married to this noble earl.” (3.4.24) This complicates a lot of things now, seeing how Romeo has already married Juliet in secret. Paris making this minor appearance, thinks that this was just, “a desperate tender of my child’s love.” (3.4.12-13) All they were trying to do was to help Juliet but, just became the enemy of the story against Romeo. For instance, he was telling Juliet, “Do not deny to him that you love me.” (4.1.25) He is trying his best to make sure that he gets the love of his life. This is just another way that Paris is messing up this crazy story by getting his love of his life to confess her love. Not even knowing that Romeo and Juliet are married which poses dramatic irony. Paris brings in a lot of this irony by trying to marry Juliet while the audience knows how she is already married to Romeo.
