It is often hard to find men whose lives encapsulate what it means to live the Christian life. But the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the few that does that very thing. He lived a devoted life of studying and preaching God’s word, and he did it in a time that was like no other. In his book Life Together, Bonhoeffer expounds upon what it means to be a part of the Christian community and what that should look like. Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s works and his life were and are still an influential part of our modern Christian world. Bonhoeffer was born February 4, 1906 in Breslau, Germany, which is now part of Poland, along with his twin sister Sabine. With his father, Karl, being a neurologist, and his mother, Paula, having a collegiate level education, Dietrich and his eight siblings had a well provided for childhood and upbringing. The Bonhoeffer children were educated and well rounded. Dietrich as a child showed talent in the area of piano, which pleased his family. But Dietrich, at 14, decided that he had a different calling. He wanted to become a theologian. Because of his background and education in the arts, his family was not keen of his decision. In 1927, Bonhoeffer graduated from the University of Berlin. His book Life Together was published in the same year, while he was still teaching at the underground seminary, Finkenwalde. At this point the government was becoming more oppressive and buckling down. In January of 1943, Bonhoeffer became engaged to Maria von Wedemeyer. Shortly after, on April 5, Bonhoeffer was arrested and taken to Tegel Prison. on February 7, 1945, he was transferred to Buchenwald Concentration Camp. About two months later, on April 9, 1945, at Flossenburg, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged. His life was short, being killed at age 39, but it seems as though he never wasted a moment of
