Anxiety and Depression are two disorders that are very difficult to fully comprehend and even talk about sometimes. These two disorders can affect anyone of any age and each person deals with anxiety or depression in a different way. Anxiety is the feeling of worry, nervousness or unease, usually about an event or something that could have a certain outcome. Every person deals with feeling anxious from time to time because of the stress that life can cause. It is difficult to understand the difference between normal anxiety and an anxiety disorder because the symptoms are the same in most cases. Researchers and experts say that they can be caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors. These disorders can also be caused by stressful events such as starting school or moving to a new school, or the loss of a loved one. Anxiety disorders often tend to run in families as well. Symptoms of anxiety disorders can include irritability, insomnia, or sleeping too much, jitteriness, or physical symptoms like headaches or stomaches (“Anxiety Disorders in Children”). There are two treatments that can help a child with their anxiety and overcome this disorder. The two treatments are cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a type of therapy that allows the child to talk and it has been scientifically proven that is effective in treating anxiety disorders. This therapy allows the child to learn to identify and replace negative behaviors and patterns with positive ones. The therapy typically lasts around 12 weeks but it benefits children in the long-term. Medication can be used for a short amount or a long amount of time depending on how severe the anxiety is. Medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy are commonly used together and work better for children when they are used together rather than alone. Anxiety can be a frightening disorder for a child to have to deal and cope with but it can be treated and the disorder can be completely gone after
