Carter Fergus Mrs. Holsather-Nelson Washington State History, Period 2 8 February 2023 Coastal vs Plateau: A Native American Cultural Comparison Washington’s Native American tribes share a unique set of cultural elements, unlike other tribes in the United States. Despite the plethora of the Coastal and Plateau tribe's similarities, Washington’s diverse geography has caused many changes that have decided many differences in the tribe’s cultural elements. These varying cultural elements include the location, tools, and food in the Coastal and Plateau tribes. To begin with, the locations of the Coastal and Plateau tribes have had an influence on the development of their cultures. Both tribes share similarities in how they lived in the wintertime. Both tribes had cold winters, usually seen throughout Washington, where they live. Also, their locations' access to resources was similar, as they both lived near the Columbia river, had access to mountains, and had access to a forest. Contrasting, some differences between the Coastal and Plateau tribes consist of the buildings. The Coastal tribes had cedar longhouses to withstand the wet and cold climate while the Plateau tribes had teepees to make their migration needs possible, and because the Plateau tribes had hot, dry summers. Both tribes both had access to bones, stone, antlers, and string to help build tools. Also, these tribes had shared some similar tools like bags, and hammers. Lots of differences have been caused due to differences in resources. First, they have different weapons, the Coastal tribes have spears, traps, harpoons, and fishing hooks, then the Plateau tribes have bows and arrows. Some differences in materials for these tools include the fact that Coastal tribes acquired Siberian metals through trades unlike the Plateau tribes, which differently had Buffalo materials that weren’t available to Coastal
