Since the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, which established a Communist government in Russia, Americans viewed the Soviets as a threat to all capitalistic countries. The revolution left Americans and the government in fear of communism taking over. This view led to anti-Communist hysteria, also known as the Red Scare of 1919. Another anti-Communist movement came about in the 1940s and 50s. This Second Red Scare became known as McCarthyism due to Joseph McCarthy's actions during his campaign.
The actions of 9/11 and the Red Scare are in fact different. With the Red Scare it was Communism and with 9/11 it was Muslims, basically all Middle Easterners. Even though the date and time of the events are different, in both events men were able to step up and take advantage of fear and hatred to turn it into suspicion and paranoia. During the time of the Red Scare attack, the U.S became afraid that communist especially from Russia and China would spread throughout the modern world. The United States is a Democratic Nation and feared that the spread of communist would be good for the United States or the world.
The Red Scare Analysis During the rise of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union had been brought into an alliance due to both of their desires to defeat Nazi, Germany. Although the Soviet Union’s aggressive, antidemocratic policy towards Europe created tensions even before World War II had ended. That being said, they tolerated each other as much as they could but weren’t exactly friends. The United States government was initially hostile to the Soviet leaders for their decision to take Russia out of World War I and was opposed to a state ideologically based on communism. The main conflict between them was their inability to agree about communism.
Sam Roberts in the article A Decade of Fear argues that McCarthyism turned Americans against each other. Roberts supports his claim by illustrating fear, describing betrayal, and comparing it to other United States internal conflicts. The author’s purpose is to point out a vulnerable period of American history in order to demonstrate that Americans felt prey to McCarthy’s negative propaganda. The author writes in a cynical tone for an educated audience. I strongly agree with Robert’s claim.
The Red Scare was really what the name says it is a “Scare of the Red”. The red was Russia or communism. Right after World War I and the Revolution in Russia, the United States was overcome with fear. There was wide spread fear of communisis and socialists. The time frame was in the 1900s between 1919 and 1920.
Red Scare was adopted because red was the color associated with communist countries and the scare was basically a fear for the communist and the spreading to America. Many people thought the immigrants would bring their beliefs and influence into the United States and change the way America was/is. The very thought of the enemy being in your home was a scary thought for all Americans. The way immigrants were migrating rapidly made people question which ones to trust and who should not be trusted. McCathyism feeds off the fear and adds fuel to the fire.
The moment that the Twin Towers fell in New York, America became destined for change. In the wake of these attacks, the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 was quickly passed through congress, and signed by then-president, George W. Bush. The act itself gives the FBI and other government agencies the ability to do and use certain methods, many of which are already used by other law enforcement organizations, to help prevent future terrorist attacks. Since then, this piece of legislation has been the center of much debate and controversy. But, there is ample reason to believe that the Patriot Act is needed and effective.
As stated before, though these both were harsh tragedies that happened in the world; it also brought the United States and other parts of the world together as a whole. Following the 9/11 attacks to support the United States for example many countries came together to show support to the United States and after the 9/11 attacks Americans began protesting and reconvening around the popularized phrase, "United We Stand," this was done so that Americans would keep the worlds hope alive in the midst of a terrible tragedy. The outcome of Red Scare enabled many states to pass the Criminal Syndicalism law that would outlaw acts of violence in securing social change; this law included limitations of free speech. In conclusion the Red Scare of 1919-1920 was set of by a fear of the Bolshevism and anarchism that Americans thought would soon be brought to America; along with the labor movement which then commenced the paranoia of the demarcated period. On the other hand the motives for the 9/11 attacks were stated to be a religious war; this also included reasoning’s as vast as the aggression of Jews in Lebanon against the Muslims, and the Americans holding sanctions against the

The USA Patriot Act was signed into law on Oct. 26, 2001, due to the need for cooperation among all levels of security. Police and other department agencies were given powerful authority and encouraged to share information. This is to meet the goal for a safer America in times of turmoil including international affairs. But as the years have passed and as terrorist attacks seem to cease, people have begun to question if there’s too many restrictions on law enforcement were called off.
The Red Scare started right after the civil war was over. There had been many riots to accrue during the time of the red scare. In the term the red scare had been a form of lose to many successful people. It took at huge toll on the government as they tried to stop and contain the many job losses, but as the time went by people start to riot in the streets because the of the cuts from their jobs had really affected them. People were losing their lives and the government did all they could to try and stop it.
Fear is an embedded gene that all living things possess. Fear, for many societal, has becomes the stepping stone to lay the pathway for each generation. Both attacks on Americans were unexpected and uncalled for. A collection of a few men took control of an entire country and everything that it was found on. Fear and hatred by a few of a multitude drove mass suspicion and paranoia across a nation.
The causes of the Red Scare was a major deal going on back in the day. Around that time World War 1 Americans was vulnerable and scared. They had many workers joining major unions. Polices was going on strike in September in 1919 even though they wanted to contribute fears. They led many immigrants from Russia to attend the United States Government.
The police used the act to access internet evidence to locate the criminal. Ridge said in the article “The Patriot Act Enhances National Security”, that “By protecting our freedom, civil liberties are enhanced, not diminished”(Ridge).
