The main points of the lecture are whether taste is objective or subjective, and what are the problems of both objectivism and subjectivism. I think there are both objectivity and subjectivity in taste. I think the first meaning of taste which is the sensation is objective, while the second meaning which is a person’s aesthetic preference is subjective. I think the sensation in objective because it depends on the chemicals that are found in food and how these chemicals bind to receptors in humans creating a sensation. As chemicals in food can be analyzed and the physiology of humans is more or less the same, so taste can be objective. Suppose a certain chemical binds with a certain receptor would create the sensation of sweetness, it should be true for most people. In 1493, pineapples were first brought to the Europeans by Columbus, and Europeans are delighted by its taste and sweetness. Pineapples cannot be grown in Europe as they need a tropical climate to grow, and transporting pineapples across the Atlantic was quite difficult. So the price of pineapples was very high and only royalty could afford. Pineapple became a symbol of luxury and had a very high aesthetic value. Pineapples were used for displaying as centerpiece, drawings and carvings of pineapples are used in tablecloths, wallpaper and even bedposts. Poorer people who cannot afford to buy pineapples would rent them in order to show off to others. However, things changed in the 1900s, where a pineapple plantation was started in Hawaii. The price of pineapples decreased significantly, and so is the craze people had for pineapples. We can see how the decrease in price of pineapples reduced its aesthetic values. It also shows that aesthetic value of food does not only lie within itself, but mostly in people who consumes
