The Federalist and Democratic-Republicans were the first and original political parties. They share exceedingly different views on America's problems. Federalists and Democratic-Republicans are known for not getting along. They had plenty of differences but also some similarities. Their views and actions formed the America we live in today. Thomas Jefferson was an ordinary farmer, but soon became the leader of the Democratic-Republican party or also known as the Republican party. Republicans believe that the most successful government would be a small government that has limited power. On the other hand, Federalists believed that the most successful government would be one that is strong and unites the states and keeps order among the people. Federalists believed that strong, smart, and successful men should lead our country. A loose construction is an interpretation that means Congress has powers beyond those specifically given in the constitution. A strict construction is an interpretation that means Congress has only the powers that were given by the constitution. This was one of the main issues Hamilton and Jefferson had amongst each other. Hamilton had a vision to better the economy, but Jefferson argued that his plan was not written in the constitution. A strict construction is what Hamilton believed in. He thought America needed a strong economy in order to develop. During the 1790’s the economy was mainly based on agriculture.
