The Haitian and Latin American Revolutions were the most alike because they were both colony revolts, had solid racial structures and hierarchies, and resulted in abolished slavery. Haiti, then known as St. Dominique, was a French colony with 90% of the population slaves. Haiti provided 40% of Europe’s sugar and 60% of its coffee, which was extremely important to the French and all of Europe. The Latin American Revolution consisted of colonies that European powers owned after Christopher Columbus discovered and colonized them. The people of the colonies were enslaved and also worked on plantations, the Europeans took sugar and other crops from them and used the slaves to work in mines.
Wright continues the telling of this historical event, under the topic of Fidelismo and the radicalization of Latin American politics. The combination of Castro’s actions and Che Guevara’s calls for revolution in the western hemisphere had a direct and profound effect on Latin American politics. This powerful force came to be known as Fidelismo and broken down to its core “it was simply the attitude that revolution should be pursued immediately” (Wright p. 39). On of the most noticeable symptoms of Fidelismo was an intense growth of demands for change. Wright notes that during this time, the intensity of political activities in many other Latin American countries increased, especially after Castro’s victory.
LEQ: During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Enlightenment thinkers projected their ideas throughout the Atlantic world. These ideas contained of changing the rule of governments on society and the ability to change to the nations leaders that were damaging the societies view upon them, resisted against oppression and the Atlantic revolutions escalated. To a small extent the inspirations for the French Revolution are different from the inspiration for other Revolutions in the Atlantic World within this time period, expressed with different social and political tensions, which varied in their outcomes. Revolutions were a common occurrence in many parts of the world. The 17th century was miserable. Between 1790 and 1848 many different people in Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and other areas of the world struggled to gain freedom and independence from oppressive and dictatorial regimes. The main social basis for both Latin America and France at the time was a social pyramid that determined class. Both regions had an upper class that were against the revolutions and lower classes who supported it. From the perspective of the upperclassmen, (Peninsulares for Latin America and the 1st and 2nd Estate for France) the old social system of classes was perfect because it benefitted them and gave them advantages and liberties over the other classes. The next class down consisted of Creoles; American-born Spaniard, and the Bourgeoisie; wealthy and educated citizens without nobility. The years 1750-1900 are better known as the Revolution Era. During this time period, there were several revolutions that occurred throughout the developing world. Two of the main revolutions were the French Revolution and the Latin American Revolution. Both revolutions followed the anatomy of a revolution and had comparable causes, however the French Revolution politically better outcomes, whereas the Latin American Revolution resulted in poverty and lost territory.
The French and Latin American Revolutions, two significant historical occurrences, aimed to overthrow repressive regimes and enshrine egalitarian and libertarian ideals. While both revolutions had similar goals, they had different outcomes because of their different socio-political environments. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen and the French Constitution, which supported individual liberties and a representative government, were products of the French Revolution, which was inspired by Enlightenment ideas (Source 1). As evidenced by the Haitian Constitution of 1801 and the Mexican Constitution of 1824, the Latin American Revolutions, including the Haitian and Mexican Revolutions, embraced the principles of racial equality and federalism (Sources 3, 6). We can learn more about the various paths and results by contrasting and comparing these outcomes.
The Haitian Revolution was distinctive, both in world history and in the history of Atlantic Revolutions, because it was the only completely successful slave revolt slowed revolutionary movements in Latin America. It was truly radical in that it either executed or forced the ruling elites to flee. 5) How were the Spanish American revolutions shaped by the American, French, and Haitian revolutions that happened earlier? Each revolution was very important to their country and had many differences as well. Mexico had multiple groups fight for a revolution while Cubans were united under Fidel Castro.
At the roots of the Atlantic revolution were the values understood from the age of enlightenment the radical notion that human political and social arrangements could be engineered and improved by human action. These ideas violently conflicted with the long held beliefs of divine rights, state control of trade and aristocratic privilege. In our history there have been many wars, revolutions, and consequences to all of these things, such as lives lost or land being destroyed but it was all worth it when they succeeded and got what they wanted, freedom. Many countries go through revolutions because they might have been under rule from another person and or country and wanted their independence. A revolution is when people overthrow a social order or even a government and are in favor of a new system or government. The American Revolution and Haitian Revolution had some similarities and some differences and this is what my argument will be about, comparing and contrasting both revolutions.
The Haitian Revolution and the Latin American Revolution were the most similar. Both revolutions were not wanting to be controlled by their so-called mother countries. Latin America wanted to be free from Spain while the Haitian's wanted to be free from France. Both places were angry over the inequalities that were rooted into their culture and revolted to try and change the inequalities. According to Robert W. Strayer, author of "Ways of the World", the Haitians were unhappy with their situation.
When one looks at all the revolutions the earth there are many differences. Evry revolution is different but every revolution have one thing in common, one group of people is being oppressed by another. For this essay we are supposed to compare two different revolutions to the American Revolution. The two others I chose are the Cuban revolution and the Haitian revolution. To begin, I will look at a little back ground of each revolution and then the main cause.
The Cuban Revolution was successful in toppling the corrupt Batista dictatorship and getting the Cosa Nostra (a major crime syndicate in Sicily) out of Cuba. The Cuban Revolution was and is not successful however, in making Cuba a free land and a good place to live for everyone. It benefited just the communist party leaders. At first the Cuban people thought they were fighting from freedom, and that they were trying to free themselves from Batista and the United States. However, what most of the cuban people didn 't know it was that it was all a lie.
