Calvinism was founded by John Calvin, a French humanist, who did most of his work in Geneva, Switzerland. John Calvin began the reformation of the church in 1543 when he wanted to turn Geneva into a Christian state. Lutheranism and Calvinism shared some of the same thoughts. One of the most commonly seen similarity was their views on salvation. Both believed that God chose certain people to be saved, and anyone not chosen would be damned to hell. It was said that God knew who would be saved from the very beginning. There were many strict rules in the Calvinism faith, some including singing, playing cards, wearing fancy clothing, and dancing were all forbidden. A minor difference between Calvinism and Lutheranism was that Calvinism believed that God controlled everything, and the Bible was the only religious guidance source. Calvinism made their laws from the Bible, and they eventually became the government's laws as well. This caused sinning to become a crime, that was punished by the Calvinist clergy, and eventually, they would be tried by the local court.
