Happy or Not So Happy Depression is a common issue in many teenagers. Amy Lafferty in “Diggers” uses digging to show depression and sadness because the characters in the story are digging to hide their depression that they have and the side effect of some depression cases is suicide and death. The Author shows depression in this story in many different ways. In “Diggers” depression, sadness, and death are shown in many ways. Depression is show in the short story because the characters are digging holes that are trying to hide the depression that has occurred in these girls lives. The way that this is show is that in the second sentence of the story the author states “ Our parents call us, but we lose their voices by digging deeper.” This sentence shows the depression because their parents are trying to help them but they don't hear a word that they are saying. Because of how depressed they are and they continue to just dig that hole of depression. Death is shown when the author states “ We dig as the universe sucks its breath into a single everything.” Death is shown in this expert from the story because the author write as though the two girls are getting sucked into the universe. which makes it seem as they died or killed suicide for getting sucking into the universe. Another way that they author shows the theme death is that in the last sentence of the story the author writes, “And as it also fades, we dig still, like a stone into God’s own heel to find what came before.” The piece of text that shows the theme is when the author states “stone into God’s heel” the death is shown as if the characters have died and dug their way into heaven or into heel and struck their heels at God to blame him for their depression.
