Some people don't realize the impact someone with a disability can have on the world because they are limited and criticized for their issues. People without disabilities can show what they have, and those with disabilities will never even get past the starting line because of people's biased views on disabilities. When you look out at the world today; it won’t take you long to point out all the tragic and horrific things that are occurring daily which include: terrorism, the current refugee situation, genocide, poverty, and mass murders among many others tragedies. Currently in the world today, people desperately need more love than hate, more compassion than judgment, more grace than harshness, and more justice than inequity. These qualities are important (love, compassion, grace) in order to making a difference in the world today, but I want to focus on justice and how it affects people with disabilities. The online English-Oxford Dictionary defines justice as, “a concern for justice, peace, and genuine respect for people” I do not agree with this definition entirely; I believe the word justice is more accurately defined as, “respect and compassion for all people no matter what situation they are in.” I have not had any personal experience with the criminal justice system, but I have seen a beautiful picture of my definition of justice unfold in my freshman physical education class back

While disability plays a major role in Mairs’ life, she points out the various ways her everyday life is ordinary and even mundane. Despite the normalcy of the lives of citizens with disabilities Mairs argues the media’s effacement of this population, is fear driven. She claims, “To depict disabled people in the ordinary activities of daily life is to admit that there is something ordinary about the disability itself, that it may enter anybody’s life” (Mairs 14). Able bodied people worry about the prospect of eventually becoming physically impaired.

There are a number of policies and legislative pieces that relate to the work role I am in. The equality act 2010 combines several different legislative pieces that are all relevant in the health and social care sector. Under this act it states that it’s unlawful to treat any individual less favourably on the basis of protected characteristics such as age, gender, disability, race or religion, all of which can vary in the care sector. This will allow us as workers to give equal opportunities and respect any barriers in place by characteristics such as religion.

Throughout history the government has passed legislation that impacts people with disabilities. Those acts and laws created exist only to improve people’s standards of living. The Poor Relief Act of 1601 was extremely important because it was the first piece of legislation that tried to help people with disabilities. In this act, the government was basically recognizing that they had a responsibility with people with disabilities. Even though this was in England and it actually did not work, it has great significance because it was the first step.
As Baynton discusses disability as a justification for inequality, I view it in the sense of a social concept of disability that sets the platform for discrimination and violence against the minority groups. This concept has been implemented in U.S. history to allow discriminatory practices against the minorities to occur. Basically, women, individuals from different races, and ethnic minorities were labeled as disabled as well to interpret inequality as a positive concept. For example, there was justification for slavery in which African Americans did not have the required intelligence which made them incapable of equality with other Americans. This assumption was ascribed to physical causes and differences that were visible in their race.
For anybody, being employed can have a crucial impact on their lives. It also has great importance on our social and material well being. Income, self-esteem, identity and sense of independence are just a number of benefits that people can gain from being an active and useful member of the workforce. Yet from a historical perspective, many disabled people have been denied such benefits because of their exclusion from mainstream social and societal activities such as worthwhile employment in particular. Interestingly, disable workers have in the past found themselves welcomed and encouraged into employment during time of shortage of able bodied workers during times of war (Barnes, Mercer & Shakespeare 1999, p.22).

Prior to the ADA, individuals with disabilities often faced significant obstacles to employment, education, and access to public life. The ADA has helped to take proactive steps to address these inequities, to ensure that individuals with disabilities are not excluded from opportunities that are open to everyone else. By recognizing their right to be included, the ADA has opened up opportunities for people with disabilities to lead fuller, more meaningful lives. The ADA has also had a significant impact on businesses and other organizations.
