There are four main executive styles that police executives employ in the execution of their roles. They include the administrator, the top cop, the politician, and the statesman. All these executive styles are dependent upon the particular external and internal roles and their time allocation for these responsibilities. In the two cases studies, both the new chief executives employ different executive styles in their attempts to reform their police departments. Captain Ed Davis employs the statesman style in running the Lowell Police Department (LPD) while Chief Ken Fortier uses the administrator style in his governance of the Riverside Police Department (RPD) which bear certain similarities and differences.
The inmates were treated so poorly that they felt they needed to retaliate against the guards. Working in a prison is a possible career choice for me, this book taught me issues that can arise while working in a prison. As a correctional officer, I want to be a productive and effective, I will be friendly with the inmates but not become friends. Summary In the journal article, “State-Created Danger” leading author Jeffrey J. Noble discusses the controversial issue of whether or not police officers should be held accountable for reckless actions. Noble begins his essay by explaining how police officers often encounter dangerous scenarios with “little or no warning, and no opportunity to develop a comprehensive plan. The police are expected to intervene quickly and make what are often citical decisions” (p. 481). Officers have such a challenging task when dealing with split-second decisions and the author points out that it is difficult to scrutnize the actions of an officer who is expected to produce nothing short of perfection in these kind of circumstances.
Introduction The topic of this paper is the South Carolina Department of Corrections. This agency was selected due to the authors’ current major of Criminal Justice. While attending classes at Tri-County Technical College I have covered many aspect of the criminal justice system as a whole along with the area of corrections. To understand, what is "discretionary decision making" within the Criminal Courts, let me explain what is discretion. According to the textbook America 's Courts and The Criminal Justice System discretion is the lawful ability of an agent of government to exercise choice in making a decision. Now, "discretionary decisions in the criminal court process are made on the basis of legal judgements" (Neubauer & Fradella, p132). The "three major subcomponents are legal judgements, policy priorities, and personal philosophies" (Cole, 1970; Smith)". An example would be a prosecutor who refuses to file a criminal charge because in her legal judgement, the evidence is not enough to prove all the elements of the offense" (Neubauer & Fradella).
