In my connections essay we will be analysing how the idea of themes such as Discrimination has been relevant throughout history as shown in Merchant of Venice, a play written by William Shakespeare. We will be creating links through the idea of religion as well as racism with cocurrent texts such as To Kill a Mockingbird (Film) by Robert Mulligan, Nosedive in Black Mirror by Charlie Brooker & Her First Ball by Katherine Mansfield. We will cover all four texts in a subjective matter discussing the connecting themes throughout each one and how the themes are for personal gain of one side, exaggerating the fact of how these themes influence society and shape the flow of progression through time. Throughout all aforementioned texts, Discrimination is very distinct as shown in the environment of all texts, Merchant of Venice & To Kill a Mockingbird for example, are set in areas of notable Discriminative natures. This is shown as how both having communities looking down upon the “minorities” of their time. To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM) being the blacks, Merchant of Venice being the Jews. This gives us a insight in the different yet similar conflict, TKAM being a closer time period being the 1930’s has got a conflict with colour, whilst in the earlier age of Merchant of Venice it was a religious conflict. This shows a relation through how time has changed the primary focus of discrimination. Religious conflict still exists in more modern time but colour is a more prevalent theme. In Merchant of Venice, the Duke begins the trial by showing how impartial he is: he immediately says he's sorry for Antonio and that Shylock is an "inhuman wretch, uncapable [sic] of pity, void and empty from any dram of mercy." Instantly showing how this bias religious view has already given an edge to the Christians and by alienating him into this “unspeakable profane human” In To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robinson is convicted of attempted rape of a white woman.
