How would you react if you found out your spouse was transgender? Would you still be with them and love them? For Millie in the novel Trumpet, she accepted the fact that her husband Joss Moody was in fact a women and she still loved him. Sadly that is not the reality in today’s society. Violence and rejection are usually what happens when we see or know someone who is transgender. When we say that America is the land of opportunity, do we really mean everyone? For Joss keeping the secret was a lot easier than his life would have been if he did not because of the rejection and comments he would have gotten. Trumpet by Jackie Kay challenges social views of boundary of gender and gender identity. Gloria Steinman once said, “A gender-equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does not exist: where everyone can be themselves (BrainyQuote). Trumpet challenges the boundaries of gender and gender identity. What do we mean by gender and gender identity? Gender would be described as the state of being male or female (dictionary). Gender Identity is a person's perception of having a particular gender, which may or may not correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth. Gender Identity is the gender you see yourself not necessarily the gender you were born with. After Joss Moody dies we find out the he was actually born a women but kept it a secret with everyone.
