One question At the beginning of the story, some of the charaters were trying to be really demanding and prideful in their authority which caused the trials to be more horrific and lead on to more death. The pride that Elizabeth has is so much that she can’t forgive John, which shows in act 4: “It come to naught that I should forgive you, if you’ll not forgive yourself” (Miller 136). Elizabeth trys to help John through what he is going through, but he will not forgive himself through all the hurt that has gone through the village. When all that comes down the people try to tell the truth, but nobody has any strength, which hurts them by not speaking up. Abigail is fearful of losing john, because of the affair they had which is in act 1: “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet” (Miller 24). So whenever John wanted to be with Elizabeth, John had to think about Abigail and that he had loved her once too. John thinks that Abigail is lieing for everything, and if the word gets out then he is having fear that he will be killed or that he will have his family taken away from him. So God wants us to know that we should not be afraid of anyone, because He knows that his light shines through us all. Later, John wnats to make things better, but he thinks that God already knows that he is going to hell when we get to act 4: “God knows how black my sins are” (Miller 142). Without God there would be fear everywhere in salem which now there is. After all the accused are dead, and Abigail left, Salem has gone to become normal again. Fear can be a factor that can hurt yourself or worse it can hurt the ones that you love, this was true for John Proctor, he had fear that if Abigail had gotten what she wanted then he would have to take her as his love.
