According to dictionary.com, “civil disobedience is the refusal to obey certain laws or governmental demands for the purpose of influencing legislation or government policy, characterized by the employment of such nonviolent techniques as boycotting, picketing, and nonpayment of taxes.” During the time period in which the film SELMA was based, Civil Disobedience was mostly used when protesting colored people's rights to vote. Martin Luther King Jr. and the rest of America, on the topics of segregation and the voting rights of minorities. It shows many examples of civil disobedience including sit-ins, marches, protests, and more. Most of the civil disobedience shown in the film was nonviolent, such as the marches held by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. The marches were the main forms of protest held by the civil rights activists, that led to the greatest amount of public interest. The film mostly focused on how those who were fighting for these rights were treated. The marches were silent, and caused no harm to anyone or anything. According to nps.gov, “they were met with very violent reactions from those opposing what was right”. As for the film in relation to abortion, they are very similar. No matter how peaceful you are, just voicing your opinion, and doing what you think is right can cause many problems. Everyone has their own opinions on every topic, as shown in the film, and there will always be opposers, no matter what is said. There can be so many laws and restrictions over any single topic, but there will always be someone who refuses to accept it. That one person causes a problem for everyone
